Dr. Patel leads Mayo Clinic's Infectious Diseases Lab, which     focuses on microbial biofilms and antibacterial resistance.  The lab is working to understand mechanisms of biofilm formation, and devise and evaluate new diagnostics and therapeutics for biofilm-associated infections such as wound and device-related infections, including endocarditis and prosthetic joint and catheter-associated infections.  The lab evaluates new antibacterial agents in vitro and in vivo, and new diagnostic approaches that address our antibacterial resistance crisis.
